The days are getting shorter, the air colder and the bike paths empty. When winter is at the door, many stow their bikes in the basement or in the garage and only step back into the pedals in spring. But that need not be! If you pay attention to a few important rules, you can let the wind blow around your nose in the cold season and can easily get through the winter months with the eBike.
1 Make the Ebike winter -proof
In winter it is wet, colder and darker than in the summer months. Therefore, a complete check of the bike, whether with or without an electric drive system, is always advisable. Lighting system, brake pads and circuit should work properly to be prepared for any weather. Wetness does not bother Ebike because the components are protected from rain and splash water. The battery protects a neoprene cover from specialist retail when driving under minus degrees.
2 Protect the battery
The battery is the most sensitive component of the Ebikes. At low temperatures, it can lose capacity, which affects the range. In winter operation at temperatures below zero degrees, it is therefore advisable to remove it, store it at room temperature and only use it to the EBIKE shortly before starting travel. After the end of the trip, the battery should ideally be stored inside at temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees. The same applies when charging the battery: the lithium-ion cells should be loaded at room temperature.
3 Ebiken in snow and ice
In the case of very adverse weather conditions such as black ice or snow drifts, both the eBike and the conventional bicycle should stop. In winter, it is advisable to only get on the bike if you trust yourself to drive yourself under the difficult conditions. Forward -looking driving is particularly on snow -covered or icy due to the top priority. Ebikers should avoid strong motor support when starting up- for the Bosch drive system, for example in turbo mode- otherwise the tires can go crazy and lose the grip. If you regularly drive over closed snow cover in winter, you can help yourself with spike tires. However, these are only approved for pedelecs with support up to 25 km/h.
4 The right clothes
With regard to the clothes when cycling, EBIKE have a great advantage: If the temperatures drop and thick winter clothing is needed, thanks to the electrical support, they do not get so sweat. So the risk of a cold succeeds. But even with Ebiken, breathable jackets are helpful that include the warmth of the body, but let air through and they offer certain comfort. The fingers get cold particularly quickly on the bike, so gloves are indispensable. Thin forehead straps and hats keep warm and fit under the helmet, which you should never do without in winter. In the dark season, it is also particularly important to be perceived well by other road users. There are bright clothing with reflectors.
5 Submit the Ebike correctly
Ebikes can spend both inside and outside as long as they are protected from snow and rain. Garage or basement are ideal. If you store your pedelec under the carport or in the unheated dandruff, you should remove the battery and store it at room temperature. Battery of Ebikes, which have the whole winter break, should also be removed and stored at around 30 to 60 percent charging capacity in a dry, not too cold place. In contrast to some other batteries, the Bosch Powerpacks do not have to be recharged in the rest phase - regardless of how long the eBike is not used.
