„Looks like shit. But saves my life.“ – Neue Verkehrssicherheitsaktion von BMVI und DVR - HildRadwelt

According to a current representative survey on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) and the German Road Safety Council (DVR), young cyclists are well aware of the dangers and the personal risk of a serious bicycle accident. Nevertheless, very few always wear a bicycle helmet because it is considered impractical, uncomfortable and unesthetic. A new traffic safety campaign by BMVI and DVR in cooperation with star photographer Rankin and "Germany’s Next Top Model" should change that.

Berlin, March 22, 2019 -New figures from the Federal Institute for Roads (BAST) prove: On the basis of representative traffic observations of 17,278 cyclists in 2018, only 8 percent of young cyclists between the ages of 17 and 30 bear a helmet. This is the slightest helmet trag ratio of all observed age groups. The results of a representative online survey under 1,006 young cyclists between the ages of 17 and 30, which was conducted in February 2019 by Forsa Political and Social Research, also confirm this. Although the respondents' self -assessment is better than the actual observations of the bast, only 28 percent according to their own statements always use a bicycle helmet, another 16 percent mostly.

Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer:

"More than half of the young cyclists say of themselves that they never or only rarely wear a helmet. And why not? Because it is supposed to look cool. With our new campaign 'Looks Like Shit. But's my life. 'We are therefore aimed at young people to motivate them to put on a helmet for their own protection. The saying may not quite correspond to the usual authority German. But he gets the message pretty closely to the point: Save Helmets! "

For aesthetic reasons, many young people do without a helmet while cycling. We want to change that! U. a. With a joint action by BMVI, down from the gas and Germany's Next Top Model/ Rankin. Our message: Helmets save life!

According to the Forsa survey, most young cyclists either do not have a helmet (40 percent) or rarely wear it (10 percent) or never (6 percent). The young respondents are very aware of the dangers in road traffic: According to the survey, a total of 43 percent of cyclists appreciate their personal risk of a serious bicycle accident with a head injury as very or rather large. The young adults are most often afraid of a collision with a collision with car, truck or motorcyclists (59 percent). More than half (53 percent) also indicates that he has already had a bicycle accident with injury. And although almost all respondents (95 percent) agree that a bicycle helmet is the best protection against head injuries, only about a quarter of all respondents (28 percent) always use a helmet.

"Germany’s Next Top Model" candidate Alicija is one of the faces of the new bicycle helmet campaign

The helmet trage quota among young adults is still clearly too low, especially since cyclists are particularly at risk as unprotected road users in road traffic.

"Our campaign 'down from the gas' chose a new path this time. We were supported by 'Germany's Next Top Model' and the star photographer Rankin. Unusual for 'down from the gas'. Sure. But it is about awakening attention. I. I. I am pleased that Alicija, Rankin and the entire team of 'Germany's Next Top Model' support our important concern and work with us for more traffic safety. I am convinced that we can do this with this campaign, "

says Federal Minister Andreas Scheuer.

"Certainly, this cooperation can help bicycle helmets - like ski helmets - get a better image in young people. Such measures for better acceptance are necessary, because bicycle helmets can prevent most life -threatening head injuries. There is nothing more important than health and health and to protect one's own life, "

says DVR President Prof. Dr. Walter Eichendorf.
